BOUTTE, LA – The Hahnville High School baseball team fell behind early against Brother Martin and ultimately lost 11-6 when a 7th inning rally fell short.

The Tigers fell behind quickly 2-0 in the 1st inning , and Coach David Baudry made the smart decision to pull his starter after just one out, giving the ball to reliever Beau Landry. Landry allowed an inherited runner to score on a sac fly, but helped the Tigers stop the bleeding for awhile and claw their way back into the game with 4 2/3 innings of quality work out of the pen.

Trailing 5-0, the Tigers bats finally came alive. Dane Wise doubled to lead off the inning and moved over to third on a Fielder’s Choice by Chipper Baudry. Hunter Leblanc attempted to steal second following a walk and the Crusaders catcher threw the ball into centerfield, allowing Wise to score from third and Leblanc to advance.

Leblanc would score on a Sacrifice Fly. A few batters later, Matthew Champagne trimmed lead to one with a two-run-homer to left-centerfield to make it 5-4 after three.

The Crusaders and Tigers would trade runs in the fourth with Brother Martin adding one on a sacrifice fly and Hahnville answering on a Hunter Leblanc RBI fielder’s choice to make the score 6-5 after four innings.

That score would hold until the top of the 6th when Landry was replaced by Josh Nunez on the mound. The Crusaders were able to add a couple playing small ball before Champagne fired a nice throw in from left to nail another Brother Martin would-be scorer at the plate to head into the bottom of the inning with the Tigers’ trailing 8-5.

The Tigers brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of that inning thanks for a HBP and double by Chipper Baudry. Hahnville was only able to get one on a RBI Fielder’s Choice by Joey Saucier and trailed 8-6 heading into the final inning.

Unfortunately, the Crusaders were able add three more, thanks, in part to a wild pitch and shot down the third baseline that Wise just missed on a dive attempt.

Things looked good for the Tigers to start the final frame, though. Landry led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Champagne. Following an error by the Crusaders’ shortstop, the Tigers had the bases loaded with no one out.

Brother Martin buckled down, however, and retired Hayden Theriot, who singled twice earlier in the game, and Saucier on strikes before getting Wise to ground out to third to end the game.
