WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two teams of students from the Satellite Center’s Advanced Television Broadcasting Class competed in the National History Day Competition in Washington, D.C. in June after placing first and second, respectively, at the state level.

Team members Asialyn Singleton, Taylor Roussel and Nyla Moore placed first at both the district and state levels for their documentary “Taking a Stand: The Desegregation of New Orleans Public Schools.” The team interviewed Leona Tate, who was one of four first graders to integrate the New Orleans public school system in 1960.

Gabrielle Raby and Katie Funck travelled to the nation’s capital for the competition as well for their documentary “WWII in the Gulf of Mexico“. The team, which also consisted of Austin Verde and Savannah Sheppard, placed second at both the district and state levels.

The National History Day Competition features several categories including websites, papers, performances, individual documentaries and group documentaries. Each state is allowed two entries per category at the national competition, and ATVB teams were able to secure both spots for Senior Group Documentary.
