The Battle on the River game, a highly anticipated rivalry between Hahnville and Destrehan High Schools was Friday, September 22, 2023. The last Hahnville victory in the annual game was in 2017, this year however, Hahnville’s Head Coach, Daniel Luquet, was very confident in his team.
“I’ll tell you what, this is a really good group. This is the first group that I’ve coached for all four years. I think we’ve got some really good leadership in this group; a lot of fight. We got some guys still learning some things,” said Luquet.
And directly involved in the team’s preparations was Hahnville’s Wide Receiver Kenny Moore. He said he was getting in the right mindset to take on the Fighting Wildcats.
“Playing physical, playing aggressive. Going 100% every time. Do our responsibilities, fulfill our role, just play how we are supposed to,” said Moore.
Meanwhile, Destrehan’s head football Coach Marcus Scott said his team wouldn’t let Hahnville’s confidence get into their heads. His players were focused on self improvement.
“Well we have to stay positive. A lot of times bad things happen in the course of a game, because Hahnville is a good team and a good program. So they are gonna make some good plays so we just have to stay as a team and together and just stay focused,” said Scott.
And to keep up with the good plays that Coach Scott is predicting, Destrehan Linebacker Semaj Walker said he has been reviewing Hahnville’s past games in order to plan his approach.
“We look forward to playing Hahnville throughout the season. I like to watch films about the teams we are about to play so I can prepare myself. I like to estimate my tackles, how many tackles I want to get,” said Walker.
