Quarter 1 Project

Hailey Walthall, Editor, Director, Writer, Producer

In the spring semester of ATVB each students gets to choose a concentration, weather, sports, short films, ect… and film a video on a topic that falls under the umbrella of that concentration. I Choose the documentary concentration this semester because During a field experience to Nichols University, we talked about feature stories and the fact that we would do feature stories in class. We ended up not having time to film feature stories, so I decided to turn my feature story into a documentary. My documentary topic was teenage actors, specifically my cousins Madison and Meghan.

I didn’t really have a brainstorm process because of the fact that I already had my topic picked before our facilitator introduced the concentrations. Since I knew my topic on day 1 of working, I immediately began calling and asking people about setting up interviews. Once interviews were set up, I shot and edited all of my footage. Once my footage was all in place, I began adding pictures, videos, and music to the video. Once I finished adding all of these components, I went through my video checking to make sure everything was how I wanted it. I then uploaded the video to vimeo and my youtube channel. Some challenges I faced was finding time to set up interviews because all of my interviewees are very busy people. Another challenge I faced was my video being fuzzy and pixelated, but once I opened a new project and reimported the video, It all became clear. My final video looked a lot better than I expected it to be. I think all of my interviews and b-roll look good and the music creates the feeling I wanted viewers to feel when watching my video.

I learned that you have to be persistent when it comes to setting interviews. It may be a challenge to work around busy schedules but if this person is able to give key information for your video, don’t give up on getting that information. I also learned that it isn’t always hard to segue between different topics in a video. You can use pictures and voice overs as transition from one topic to another. I would choose this concentration because you can turn almost any topic you’re interested in into a documentary. As long as you can get good information about your topic, you can be as creative as you want to be.
