Quarter I Project

Dominic Marino, reporter/anchor/videographer

For this project, we, the students in ATVB, selected concentrations to focus on and produce stories about what we chose. The concentrations available were News, Commercials, Weather, Short films, Sports, and Documentaries. For the first quarter, I chose News and I did my story on the new transport trailer at the St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter. I chose this story because of my love for animals and it was a big step for the shelter in acquiring the trailer because it benefited them greatly towards transporting animals that need to be adopted to other shelters.

My process for this project went very well. One thing is that I already completed my Senior Project with the help of the Animal Shelter, so I already knew it would be fun and easy to work with them. I contacted the shelter and set up an interview with them so I could find out how the shelter has helped them and get information on what they use the trailer for. I also contacted United Way of St. Charles because the shelter asked them for a grant, so United Way was a big help in this project as well. Some challenges I faced were coming up with questions and getting footage. Some footage I got did not come out well, so I had to reshoot it and I came up with questions based on knowledge I already had and my close relations to the shelter. My final video came out pretty well but not exactly how I wanted it to. I liked my voiceovers and B-Roll, but my interviews did not come out so great. The video was a little fuzzy and by the time we realized we couldn’t make it better, it was too late to reshoot so we had to stick with the video I had

Some things I learned after choosing this concentration was that it is a lot of work to put together a news story. You have to be prepared. you have to have ideas on how you want it to look and when you shoot the actual newscast, you have to practice and know what to say. I would definitely choose this concentration again because I had a lot of fun with it and it was very interesting.
