Commercial Reflection

Hailey Walthall, Editor, Director, Writer, Producer

This project was to create a commercial for United Way of St. Charles and one of their partner agencies. In order to complete this project I had to set up interviews with people from United Way and my partner agency, collect b-roll, film my interviews, edit together my interviews and b-roll and set it to music in order to end up with my final project.

I though the project was a great starting project to get us experience with real world clients. This project exposed us to actual clients and helped us to learn about meeting deadlines. I enjoyed all aspects of this project and would do it again in a heartbeat. I learned how hard it can be to set up interviews with people.

Working with an outside client was good. Although there were a few struggles, overall it was a good experience. A challenge I faced was setting up interview times and locations with my clients. Another challenge I faced was having to have footage reshot because it was grainy. I did my job and completed the project with minimal help. I think my project was a success because I did all things needed to complete the project on time.

My video ended up better than I expected it to at the beginning of the project. My video was better than some peoples but not as good as others. What made my video better was that it had tons of b-roll and was visually appealing but it was not as good as some because it lacked flow in certain places. The feedback from others helped make my video because as good as it could be because other people caught mistakes or changes that I could make that I hadn’t seen before. Yes, when watching certain peoples video I could see little changes they made because of things I suggested.

I would try and have more than just pictures as b-roll if I did this project again. I don’t think there is anything that needs to be changed about the way the project is structured. There was more than enough time to get everything done, and everyone was presented with multiple opportunities to get things done during class time. I would tell people who are doing this project that stressing does not help you get anything done and the sooner you take initiative and set up interviews, the sooner you can begin editing and creating your video to look exactly the way you want it to look.
