United Way Commercial

Joliette Vincent, Director

This Project was to make a commercial for an outside client. We needed to make a short one that was about one min long and a longer one that was no longer than two and a half min. Our first step was to find an outside client that partners with United Way. Then we would contact our agencies and find a time to schedule an appointment. Then with B-roll and the interview we made videos to advertise the agency.

I think it was a good project to get us ready for working with outside agencies.I did not like this project a whole lot. I did not like how long this project was drawn out. I did not like how I was not able to find an agency. I did not like how stressful the whole thing was. Although I did not like it I think that it was very helpful and very needed for people like me who cannot “adult”. I learned to be able to call someone without a script and I learned to work around issues.

Working with an outside client was stressful and scary. I am not a person who can call someone and just know what to say. A lot of the time I just felt like I was waisting people’s time. I found it the hardest to say no to someone or to cancel or reschedule things.

My video kind of disappointed me a bit because I usually have high expectations with the work I do but this time I felt like I rushed my work. I felt like I wasn’t very passionate due to the fact that I had no one to give the video to. My video was not the worst but it wasn’t the best either. Even though I rushed it a tad bit, I still tried my hardest to make something interesting. The feedback I received helped me clean up the video and it gave some new perspective as to what was wrong. I couldn’t really tell if anyone listened to the feedback I gave.

If I were to do this project again I would probably ask for an agency first rather than choose my own and ending up with failure after failure. I think that Mr. Robinson should have a better backup plan if next year they have to choose from a list of people because two of us this year had to make basically the same project due to the lack of success. If I had to talk to students who also have a project similar to this I would probably say something along the lines of, “The people you are contacting may seem intimidating, but they are also people. They aren’t anything to fear. You’ll find most of them to be quite nice actually.” Also I would say not to procrastinate because that will lead to misery and pain.
