SCP Outside Commercial Project

Dominic Marino, camera/editor/interviewer

This project was making commercials for the St. Charles Department of Economic Development and Tourism, who reached out to us and asked us to make commercials to promote their department. This project required a lot of work. We contacted many people from different places in the parish so we can conduct interviews and explain why they were such a valuable part of St. Charles Parish. These groups included people from restaurants, festivals, wildlife, and historic landmarks.

My thoughts on this project as a whole were that some people worked really well on their part of the project and some groups did not do as well. I liked going out of class to different places and learning more about the different events in the parish that make it such a great place. Parts of the project that were not so great was going out to reshoot interviews that did not come out so well the first time. Some things I learned were that there are many different festivals in St. Charles Parish that many people go out and support.

It was a good experience working with an outside client for the first time. I got to see how major departments of service wanted things done so they can promote what they do in an effective way. My group worked very well together. We helped each other out and overcame challenges that some of us faced when people turned us down for interviews and we had to do the best we can to find people who wanted to be interviewed.  I felt very good about my involvement in the project. I got some really good interviews and b-roll that were able to be used in the festival part of the video. I contributed to my group’s success by pulling my weight and getting all of my work done.

My expectations were very different before launching the project. At first, I thought we would be working on the videos all together, but then we branched out into groups and each group member made their own section for the commercials. I think my group’s videos came out better than the others because some people seemed to do as quality of a job as they should have done. The feedback we received helped make our videos more detailed. I could tell that some people listened to the feedback and some people didn’t by looking at the videos later on and seeing if they included anything that was told to them.

One thing I would do differently about this project is including more future festivals so people can learn more about them. One thing that could be changed for a project like this next time is making sure everyone has their work done on time and if not, don’t give second chances because that’s not how it works in the real world.  I would tell people in the future that work on a project similar to this one to stay on top of things and don’t goof off.
