Final St. Charles Video

Lyndsey Matherne, Camera/Interviewer/Editor/Group Leader

This project was a way to promote St. Charles in all aspects regarding business, tourism, and residential. My group’s section of the project highlighted some of the businesses here and the effect it has on the economy along with promoting outside residents to move and start businesses in this parish. To reach the final outcome of our video my group and I planned everything out before going out and filming. We decided what shots we would do and who we would interview. Then we went out got everything done and came back and edited it all together. Through the editing process we realized we needed more B-roll and went out and got it, but in the end, we got everything completed.

Starting this project I was honestly excited. I think this is an amazing real-world experience project and we have learned a lot from it.  I really enjoyed setting up interviews and going out and filming them. It was fun to get to go meet new people and hear there thoughts on St. Charles and learning about what they do. What I did not like was coming back and editing everything. Normally I thoroughly enjoy editing, but I felt very overwhelmed with this project because it was so much. It is not that I did not I did not enjoy this because I did it was just rough at some points which I did not like. In the end, I was able to edit everything together. During this project, I learned how to schedule and make interviews.

Working with an outside client for the first time was nerve-racking, but fun. It gave us an opportunity to do more than what we normally do. Our group contribution could have been better. We could have all contributed more to the group, but for the most part, there were some who were pulling not only their weight, but others. It would have been more successful if we all put in the same amount of work into what we were doing. I felt, for the most part, I was pretty involved in the project. I set up most of the videos and filmed most of the b-roll. When it came to editing though I did not assist my group as much as I should have especially having been the group leader. My contribution helped my group positively because without me they would not have scheduled as many interviews.

I had very high expectations for this project at the beginning, but by the end of it, my video was not exactly what I wanted it to be. looking at our videos compared to others I find ours did better staying focused on what our section of the video was compared to others. I also feel that ours had a more diverse amount of interviews. Other people commenting on our videos really helped because we were able to fix our mistakes and make it better. After looking and commenting on others and then re-watching them I could tell they did take our advice.

Doing this project again I would make sure that the camera shots looked good before leaving that way we would not have to touch them up in the editing process and been able to fly through editing. Along with that I would have gotten more B-roll that way we would not have to film more while we were supposed to be editing. When doing this project in the future I would say do not randomly assign groups nor let people pick there own groups. Maybe consider who works well together and who doesn’t that way you could make more productive groups. I would say to future students make sure you get enough B-roll and make sure that your shots are good before going back to editing. Along with that frame your interviews correctly Mr. Robinson had a whole lesson framing interviews and we still did not get some of them right. Just do it correctly the first time so you don’t have to go back and redo it.
