SCP Tourism Food

Cameron Chauvin

This project was a for the St. Charles Parish website.  We had to create videos to promote various St. Charles Parish businesses and lifestyles.  The area we was assigned to create a video for was food and tourism.  Several steps had to be taken to complete this project.  We were to first figure out what foods and types of restaurants were most popular in this area.  We discovered that bars and cajun-style restaurants brought in the majority of the income in this category.  We also had to research how the Mississippi River brings in and promotes business in this parish.  Finally, we had to set up interviews with various bars and restaurants around town and carry those out.

Overall, I feel the project went well.  While calling to schedule interviews, we often got declined, which became very frustrating and disappointing. I enjoyed the freedom of the project.  For example, being able to put our own emphasis on the project was fun and a little empowering.  Throughout this project I really feel like I learned a lot more about editing as well.

Again working with outside clients was quite difficult.  We were surprised at how many bars or restaurants didn’t want to be a part of this.  It seems like free promotion to me, but many turned us down to interview them.  Our group, however, worked very well together.  We divided responsibilities fairly and stuck through those.  My particular job involved scheduling and interviewing a restaurant owner, and I feel like although it was challenging, it was a success.

Our video was better than what I expected it to be.  It was difficult to get the interview done, but once we did, I feel that we put together a well-done video.  I think that our group’s video was better than others because we got it in on time, it had all the components, and more. Getting feedback from others was a big help.  If nothing else, it helped me push forward and not get too overwhelmed.  And I’m not really sure if other’s used my feedback, but their videos seemed mostly on-point.

If I were doing this project over again, I would make sure the restaurants I set up interviews with were actually in the parish.  I would also be more aware of time limits.  This was difficult to get done in the amount of time we had.  I know I’m not great with managing my time, so maybe that’s just me, but I could have used more time.  I would tell future students to set-up a to do list and dates to have each of those items done by.
