OTP Analysis

LULING, LA – I looked back at our 5th DHS On The Prowl for my analysis. I do think it was a quality video. The camerawork was great, and the anchor and coach had a good back and forth, especially during the highlights. It was also easy to follow the flow of the conversation with the directing/switching work. The two biggest strengths of this video would have to be the audio and the camerawork. Again, the camera shots looked good, and I was especially happy with the fact that the single shots of the coach and the anchor looked similar (like the coach didn’t have way more headroom in his shot or way more desk at the bottom than the anchor). The audio was really good, and they fixed their one mistake early on very quickly, that being that the music during the highlights was overpowering the anchor and coach. Areas which need improvement have both minor and major issues. A more minor one was that the anchor was kind of monotone, but I know that’s because he was nervous. It may have helped if he had known his script more because he could’ve focused more on how he sounded and actually looking at the coach rather than the teleprompter. Another minor one was that the director never truly seemed to use the two shot, and that could’ve been included way more often to make the video a little more interesting to watch. The biggest problem that needed to be improved was the editing because there were many issues with it. The opening (the actual one not the anchor’s opening) got cut off, you could hear the set director counting down (especially that second time, it really could’ve been easily muted), the ending music was much too loud and overpowered the anchor, the credits went by too fast and the last shot was up for too long, since the audio wasn’t really faded well it also seems to abruptly end the video. One that was really bad was the cuts to break. I know that we have nothing to put in there right now (no commercials that are currently available), but that’s why the editor should’ve just cut that out entirely and went straight to the anchor’s introduction for the highlights/the coming-up questions (and not straight to the actual highlights). We could improve with the anchor issues by just encouraging them to be more familiar with their scripts (read them a few times when they get home the day before), and also telling them to use their script rather than the teleprompter so they can turn more towards the coach for questions. We can also check for any of these issues in the future by having someone other than the assigned editor sit down and watch the video all the way through before we export it and put it online.
